# Archive a repository

> Archive a repository: make it read-only.

<div class="g1t-endpoint"><span class="g1t-method" data-method="post">POST</span><code>/repos/{owner}/{name}/archive</code></div>

Needs the Admin role. Pushes and merges are refused, issues and pull requests are locked, and agents and workflows do not run. It can still be read, cloned and searched, and its deployments keep serving. [`unarchive_repo`](/reference/api/repositories/unarchive-repo/) makes it writable again.

The repository, with `archived_at` set. Needs the Admin role (`403` otherwise). See [Archive a repository](/guides/managing-repositories/#archive-a-repository).

- **Authentication:** Required. Send an [access token](/reference/api/#authentication) as `Authorization: Bearer`.
- **MCP tool:** [`repository`](/reference/mcp/#repository) with `action` `archive`, and the same inputs
- **Scope:** An access token needs [`repo:admin`](/guides/authentication/#scopes).
